STRATEGIC PHILANTHROPIC GUIDANCE

WHO WE ARE
Ben Maddox, Founder
Ben is a third-generation member of the Maddox Family, descendants of Jack and Mabel Maddox, who continue Jack and Mabel’s legacy of business ventures in the utility, real estate, gas and oil, and banking industries, and civic leadership in southeastern New Mexico. Along with his active involvement in the direction of the family businesses, Ben is a Director of the JF Maddox Foundation, established in 1963 by his great Uncle, Jack, which serves the residents of southeastern New Mexico through support to a wide variety of non-profit organizations and governmental entities involved in education, social programs and community development. Along with other family members, Ben has worked to develop the JF Maddox Foundation’s strategic commitment to working with its grantees and other partners to think big, dig deep, and connect the community to cultivate big-picture possibilities and bring about change to overcome challenges and accelerate opportunities that help people thrive for generations.
Coming from a multi-generational family enterprise in a rural community that continues to successfully transition leadership across generations, and having been both deeply involved in this work and having developed his own knowledge through a wide variety of programs for leaders of family enterprises and philanthropies – yet also having pursued his own unique path for his life, and thus feeling himself like the black sheep of the family – Ben recognized the need for an advisory group to deliver more directly and effectively to small and medium-sized family enterprises this otherwise disparately available knowledge. Not seeing any high-quality effort to serve this need, Ben has dedicated himself to forming Black Sheep Advisory and gathering together the group’s advisors to support small and medium-sized family enterprises across the Unites States to build extraordinary value, create unique opportunities for the next generation and future generations of the family, and have a unique impact on the world.
In addition to his work with his family business and philanthropic ventures, Ben is also a trustee of The Nature Conservancy of New Mexico and the Taos Community Foundation, in which he has served in various leadership roles, helping the foundation to grow and develop its orientation to guiding strategic philanthropy throughout north central New Mexico. Ben is also a certified arborist and leads Maddox Outdoor Solutions.
